Okay, now it’s getting serious. The National Guard MAY have to step in. WHY? Because many members of the National Guard are truck drivers. A point to note is that the supply chain disruption will cause the National Guard drivers to get pulled from their day jobs in order to help contribute to the supply chain mess.
We encourage you to read the article we wrote last week. If you recall from a previous article, “A Perspective of the Supply Chain Issues – Ports of Long Beach & Los Angeles: Part 1”, we reported and supplied some insight into the port congestion that is occurring offshore southern California that is affecting the supply chain of imported goods across the country.
According to Freightwaves, “[The port] observers might see a drop in congestion at the Ports of L.A. and Long Beach, or wherever those drivers are shifted towards. But we think on the back end, we will see a decrease in service and delivery for those routes those drivers were pulled from to serve.”
As reported by Eric Kulisch, Air Cargo Editor,
“The Port of Long Beach reported Thursday it handled 8.6 million shipping units through November amid relentless consumer demand for imported goods. Next door in Los Angeles, the port director said using the National Guard to evacuate containers is still an option if more cargo lingers beyond its move-by date and terminal congestion worsens again.”
WHO OWNS THE VESSELS?
Top Three Companies (as of data that was collected in December 2021) and descriptions from Wikipedia:
- Nippon Yusen Nippon Yūsen Kabushiki Kaisha, also known as NYK Line, is a Japanese shipping company and is a member of the Mitsubishi keiretsu. The company has its headquarters in Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan.
- Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. (MSC) a Swiss-Italian international shipping line. It has been the largest container shipping line since late 2021, after overtaking fellow 2M Alliance member Maersk. The company operates in all major ports of the world
- Evergreen Marine Corporation is a Taiwanese container transportation and shipping company headquartered in Luzhu District, Taoyuan City, Taiwan. With over 150 container ships, it is part of the Evergreen Group conglomerate of transportation firms and associated companies.
In October of 2021, the Port of Los Angeles got approval to expand to a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week operation as part of an effort to relieve pandemic-related supply chain issues and clear record-breaking backups of container ships at the Ports of L.A. and Long Beach.
DID EXPANDING TO A 24-HOUR, SEVEN-DAY-A-WEEK OPERATION MAKE A DIFFERENCE? IT APPEARS THE ANSWER IS YES.
Anchored ships actually dropped from 42 on 12/5 to 24 on 12/9. It’s the first time it’s dropped like this and the first major reduction in anchored ships. The data that was analyzed included ships who reported to be “At Anchor, Moored, Stopped, or Underway”. The source of this data is referenced on the map but we wondered what the bigger picture looks like if we were to zoom out. This map is from Brian Sullivan’s post on LinkedIn which is sourced from Marine Traffic data. Look at the number of ships offshore and the path they are on?
As Brian noted in his post “it looks like many of these ships are now stacking (hiding?) off the coast of Mexico. All the ships in that blue circle are coming from China – except one that’s coming from Oakland, CA – and are on some weird southern circular route. Most are moving .. but only at 1 knot.”
What do you think about this entire situation? Please let us know by commenting or sending us a message. We’d love to hear from you! With less than two weeks until Christmas, will you receive the items you ordered in time? Or is your item sitting offshore or still in transit?
