State Highlights
California in Cahoots With Canada
Governor Gavin Newsom and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau launched a new cooperation to pursue ambitious climate action, building on California’s global leadership on climate issues and continuing the partnerships established with other countries. In order to combat climate change, lessen pollution, reduce plastic waste, advance zero-emission vehicles, safeguard the environment, and increase climate resilience, California and Canada signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC). This expands Canada’s environmental partnerships that now exist between California, New Zealand, Japan, and China.
Kern County in Hot Water
Kern County’s environmental review of its 2021 oil and gas code was found to have violated the state’s fundamental environmental protection legislation by neglecting to address substantial environmental impacts, according to a key judgment from the Kern County Superior Court. The California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) was once more violated, according to the Superior Court’s ruling, by the County’s most recent analysis. In examining and mitigating the consequences of oil and gas production on agricultural land, air quality, and water supply, particularly for disadvantaged populations, the County did not adhere to the minimal requirements outlined by CEQA.
