The Marcellus Shale | August 2022
Field Overview
The Marcellus Shale is the largest gas play onshore in the US. Located in the Northeast, it supplies the high-demand markets along the East Coast. Most of the basin’s gas is produced through unconventional methods, while the little oil produced is mostly by conventional means. Some of the top formations include the Onondaga and the Huntersville.

Basin Highlights
Researchers find spreading drilling wastewater on Pa. roads can lead to harmful runoff
High traffic gravel roads are often coated with a mixture consisting mostly of water which is used to keep the amount of dust sent into the air by vehicles to a minimum. A common source of water is wastewater from oil and gas operations since it has other chemicals in it that make it particularly good at its job. Researchers at Penn State, however, have run a few tests and found that it may be doing more harm than good. Runoff from the roads carries these chemicals into the nearby environment, or even being sent into the air which people living nearby breathe in. While some counties in the state have already banned the disposal of wastewater by spreading it on roads, others have yet to do so.
Fetterman Calls Out Big Oil For Gouging Consumers
Lieutenant governor and democratic candidate for the US Senate John Fetterman has set his sights on the oil and gas industry. Fetterman has recently come out against big oil companies in his state of Pennsylvania, claiming that they should be held accountable for price gouging customers at gas stations. Attacking big oil is a popular stance to run on lately as people are sick of paying a premium for their gasoline despite oil companies reaching record profits. Fetterman has called out Chevron, Exxon, and Shell specifically and says that if elected he will crack down on oil executives and their companies for profiting off the backs of everyday Americans.
Dr. Oz aims to defend the energy industry, which has boosted his nonprofit and Pennsylvania Senate campaign
Opposite candidate Fetterman is TV personality Dr. Mehmet Oz, known more simply as Dr. Oz, who is gunning for a seat at the state senate. While Fetterman is quite publicly against the oil and gas industry, Dr. Oz is all for it.The industry has also returned the favor, donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to his businesses and campaign. Oz has defended big oil companies amidst claims that they are profiteering off of the high gas prices, claiming that the government has made it difficult to carry on production.
