The Marcellus Shale | August 2023
Field Overview
The Marcellus Shale is the largest gas play onshore in the US. Located in the Northeast, it supplies the high-demand markets along the East Coast. Most of the basin’s gas is produced through unconventional methods, while the little oil produced is mostly by conventional means. Some of the top formations include the Onondaga and the Huntersville.

Basin Highlights
Underground mines are unlikely to blame for a deadly house explosion
According to state officials, it is unlikely that natural gas seeped from an abandoned underground mine and caused a house explosion that killed six people in western Pennsylvania. According to the state Department of Environmental Protection, its inspectors looked into the local coal seam and discovered no shafts or bore holes close to the exploding house. However, a department statement said they “determined the likelihood of an abandoned mine-related gas issue to be very low.” The agency did not specify how much of the house the inspectors searched. Three buildings were destroyed and at least a dozen others were damaged by the explosion. The cause is still being looked into. According to the authorities, the focus of the investigation is currently related to the homeowner’s hot water tank.
Study suggests links between natural gas drilling and asthma, lymphoma in children
According to recent reports, residents of all ages who lived close to natural gas wells in heavily drilled western Pennsylvania were more likely to experience severe asthma attacks and children who lived there were more likely to develop a relatively uncommon form of cancer. Because the studies weren’t intended to do that, the researchers were unable to determine whether the drilling contributed to the health issues. Instead, the researchers looked through health records to try to identify potential correlations based on how far away from natural gas wells people lived, while industry groups drew attention to what they claim are flaws in the study’s underlying assumptions and the data’s limitations. However, the scientists claimed that they had not discovered any links between gas drilling and brain, bone, or childhood leukemia.
