Field Overview

Ranking 6th in oil production and 3rd in natural gas production, the SCOOP/STACK play is one of the largest fields within the continental United States. It is primarily a shale play, with the Anadarko and Ardmore basins providing a bulk of the production. Some of the top formations are the Woodford Shale and Hunton Carbonate.

When it comes to energy policy, Hofmeister distances herself from Biden

Energy politics is always a big deal, and that is especially true when the midterm elections are coming up. In a recent forum at the Petroleum Alliance in Oklahoma, republican Governor Kevin Stitt faced off against his democratic opponent State Superintendent Joy Hofmeister. While Governor Stitt attempted to tie his opponent to Biden and his often criticized energy policies, Superintendent Hofmeister made sure to voice her skepticism over Biden and his policies. “I am very concerned about the rhetoric that we hear from the Biden administration.” Said Hofmeister. Making an enemy of the oil and gas industry in Oklahoma, a state so dependant on the industry, would be political suicide. As both candidates distance themselves from Biden you can’t help but wonder if it’s all talk in front of such a pro-industry audience. 

Research begins on retrofitting Oklahoma oil wells into geothermal

As the world attempts to transition to greener forms of energy, researchers are desperately searching for the best ways in which to do so. One of the latest ideas that has become popular is to use old oil wells in geothermal operations. The main downfall of geothermal is its cost, which is largely attributed to drilling the well. If pre-drilled wells can be used, the cost of geothermal decreases dramatically and hopefully so too does the cost of energy. The first step in the conversion process is retro-fitting oil wells with geothermal surface equipment. The Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy of the University of Oklahoma (OU) has begun the process on four old wells nearby the school. Should the experiment prove successful, they will be used to heat nearby grade schools.
