The Williston Basin | June 2022
Field Overview
The Williston Basin is a large sedimentary basin along the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains in western North Dakota, eastern Montana, and southern Saskatchewan, Can. The basin is characterized by thick sequences of sediments that underlie an area of about 110,000 square miles, and it is geologically closely related to the Alberta Basin in Canada. The first wells in the Williston were drilled in the 1936, and by 1954, 80% of possible producing acreage had been leased.

Pilot Project for EOR Approved by the Public Service Commission
Continental Resources will be building a 3.1 mile natural gas pipeline, to bring the gas from WBI’s pipeline to the Buddy Domingo oil well pad in Williams County. The gas will be used for enhanced oil recovery. The Huff and Puff technique has been well utilized across the United States, but not as frequently in the Bakken oilfield. Through this pilot project, Continental will assess the economic and technical feasibility of enhanced oil recovery in the Three Forks and Bakken formations. Continental is optimistic about the outcome.
4 North Dakota men accused of stealing $2.4 million of crude oil
According to reports from representatives of Crestwood Midstream, there were 149 deliveries of stolen oil between November 2020 and March 2022, according to McKenzie County court records. 34,199 barrels totaling more than $2.4 million have been found to have been stolen by 4 men through this period. The Sheriff’s Office claims the men would skim oil they were scheduled to unload and store it within two of their own tanks. The leader of the outfit, Michael Garcia, claims “There are a lot of trucking companies out here that skim oil, everybody does it, it’s very easy, you can manipulate the numbers.”
